Like everyone else, my life has suddenly kicked into holiday mode - in all of its decorating, shopping, eating and party-going glory. In the midst of this flurry, I like to take a few moments during the month to step away from the frenetic end-of-year pace and just Slow. Everything. Down. For me, this can mean getting up on the slopes for a day of snowboarding, or sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee ("to go" cups do not count!), or savoring a lovely dinner and nice wine with a friend.
Our winemaker dinners are exactly the kind of slow-down moments I'm talking about. Tucked into one of our lush and cozy private dining rooms, we make a limited number of seats available, and prepare a stunning, multi-course tasting menu that highlights the wine pairings. Platters of food are passed around the table, family style. Like an old friend, the winemaker (in this case Kent Fortner of Road 31, Tricycle Wines and Mare Island Brewery) tells a few stories of his wines/winemaking adventures, which makes you appreciate the wine even more after hearing them. Glasses are topped off throughout the night. And for one blissful evening, you can sit back, slow down, and relax over easy conversations.
Kent Fortner is a man of many talents (fantastic Pinot, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and even craft beer!), yet one of the most humble and friendliest winemakers around – perfect to host our last winemaker dinner of the year. As a wine buyer for the past 10 years I have been fortunate to taste 100’s of new wines each year. The downside (if there is one) of tasting so many wines is that you often overlook old favorites and your palate can actually shift with these new taste experiences. While that has occurred with numerous wines, there are a handful of wines that have been stalwarts on Pago’s wine list and in my cellar since Pago’s opening in 2009. Road 31 Pinot Noir, by Kent Fortner is one such wine. He was actually the first winemaker we ever hosted at Pago within our first couple months of business!
Kent has been crafting roughly the same quantity of quality Pinot, 700 cases worth, since 2001 with precision and consistency. Since our 2009 wine dinner with Kent, we have opened three more restaurants and Kent opened a brewery, Mare Island Brewing, and became general manager of Tricycle Wine Partners, producing stunning Chardonnay from Napa and Cabernet from the newly recognized Red Hills AVA in the Mayacamas Mountains. Nearly six and a half years later, I am honored to have him join us at Finca and share some stories, break some bread, and imbibe in all the goodness that Kent creates.
From his most recent craft beer project, to his flagship Pinot, it will be re-union of sorts with good friends, great food and great wine. Join us!
